The Week in Review

Saturday

Food
Notes

Exercise: ~40 minutes of walking.
Total Estimated Calories: ~1380kcal.

Tiredness struck the hour before lunch and the hour before dinner, not abnormal for me but I did (seem to) sleep soundly the night before. This may justify a snack between each meal if recurring over the coming days. Indeed, as the light dinner seemed fine, I’d prefer increasing daytime calories.

Ultimately, nothing of note occurred, most of the day was spent reading, writing or on similar activities.

Sunday

Food
Notes

Total Estimated Calories: ~1480kcal

Exercise: ~30 minutes of walking

Slight yet persistent enervation until dinner, I do not believe I slept poorly, which was in fact the same as yesterday (~12pm-8am).

Gut health seems to have improved based on the past two days.

Monday

Food
Notes

Exercise: ~30mins walking

Total Calories: ~1530kcal

Light sense of sleepiness throughout the day, however I underslept (2-8am) the night before which itself was likely an effect of late caffeine consumption.

Tuesday

Food
Notes

Exercise: ~30mins walking

Total Calories: ~1550kcal

Severe tiredness after lunch, I’m starting to be of the view that the 400kcal JJ is far from a meal, and filling in energy privations the with snacks isn’t ideal.

Wednesday

Food
Notes

Exercise: ~50mins walking

Total Calories: ~1413kcal

Energy levels were much better today, however on a sustainable basis I think it may be best to accept 4 meals in each JJ pack, and then aim for 115-120g of powder per meal. This, combined with any snack, gives a more room in terms of daytime calories. The cost per meal would rise though, to ~$3.19 per meal (a standard home made lunch can be achieved at similar cost, so reduces to time saving, and potential nutritional benefit, primarily).

Thursday

Food
Notes

Total Calories: ~1410kcal

Exercise: ~30mins walking

Friday

Food
Notes

Exercise: ~50mins walking

Total Calories: ~1363kcal

Energy levels throughout the day were normal.

Observations

Consuming exactly the right amount is difficult

It’s difficult to get a completely homogeneous liquid, there’s also almost always a residual sludge at the end which feels like a loss of valuable calories if left unconsumed. My solution was to add a bit of water with rigorous stirring to capture the leftover. It was then that I had made a chance discovery of a military-grade exercise in perserverance, consuming an initial 5mL of the taste of regret, following by 45mL of despondency.

Henceforth, I will use about ~105g of JJ, I’m fairly confident no more than 15g is being lost, in fact I believe that to be quite conservative. The weekly JJ consumption is now 1540g, or a bit over three bags netting ~$2.7 per meal, less cheap but still affordable. But, as the stated weight of each bag is ~476g, I will have to dig into a fourth bag to reach 1540g. The exact meal price via a per gram cost is $2.87. I will experiment with milk and other variations next week, then I can cut back to 95g though overall cost will be similar/slightly more pricey depending on what I add.

Vanilla taste’s fine and hunger is a non-issue

Consuming the JJ over 10-30mins (and not at once), I had no issues with hunger during the day. Similarly, the taste was of no concern, about on par with unsweetened porridge. In general, I imagine after it becomes habit the taste won’t be on one’s mind whatsoever.

Difficult to meet 1500kcal on standard 400kcal JJ

Even though I’m not going hungry throughout the day, failing to consistently reach 1500kcal may be a partial cause of the lower energy levels (Friday an odd exception). Next week will be an interesting test, fortifying the JJ with milk and potentially increasing the amount of snacks to exceed 1500kcal everyday, or more importantly comfortably meeting energy needs measured in the narrow terms of calories (probably more in line with 1700-1800kcal).
